Nobody told me I would be so busy. Ok, that isn’t true. Everybody told me. How many times did I hear my mom say “You just wait till you have kids”. It always seemed those words came out of her mouth for no apparent reason. Looking back, I was probably demanding to know why she bought cupcakes for the bake sale rather than whip them up the night before while I was in bed.
I get it now. I am a busy mom. I am crazy busy. Between my ten year old, my two year old and my full time job, I don’t have much time for the important stuff, let alone the extras, and even though I am fully aware of the importance of keeping fit, finding time to go to the gym is pretty much out of the question.
For the longest time, I beat myself up about it. Then one day the lightbulb went off and I realized I needed to get some kind of fitness regime in. Somehow, I needed to get a “workout”. Admittedly, in the beginning it was tough. Grabbing even 10 minutes seemed impossible. Two years in, I have a pretty good routine and I have no need to join a gym.
What’s my secret? I was creative. I added small routines throughout my day that quickly added up and before I knew it, I was in shape.
Here are 5 hacks that I have used and continue to use to this day:
There are thousands of amazing short videos for everything fitness. From the 15 minute yoga boost for beginners, to how to use 5lb weights to get fit, there is something for everyone. You will have to be selective and make certain you are following a reputable channel, but the opportunities are endless.
Buy a stability ball and a few free weights
Stability balls can be your best friend. You can do numerous core workouts with a stability ball and it can also work as your workout bench. Download or You Tube a video on stability ball exercises and you are on your way.
Yup, the dreaded plank. Warm up your body a bit and do a bit of stretching, then get on the ground and do the plank. Planking is tough, but, it really builds your core. Start with 10 seconds and build yourself up. Challenge yourself to do a little bit longer every day and in no time you will feel the difference.
Grab Some Cardio
No matter how busy you are, cardio exercise is essential. You don’t have to jog for 30 minutes to get the positive effects of a cardio workout. Short interval workouts of 10 minutes can really work. Some jumping jacks and burpees and you are getting a workout.
We forget how amazing walking can be. If you have little ones, pop them in the stroller and take a short walk right after work. If you drive to work consider parking as far away as you can and if you can walk to work, try to walk at least once or twice a week.
With a little bit of creativity and some help from You Tube, you can find the time to get some healthy fitness in. Set goals that you can achieve and remember that every little bit helps. In no time you will feel the benefits without the stress of fitting in a full workout in your busy day.
