Although there always seems to be a few false starts to the beginning of nice weather, those lazy, crazy, hazy days of summer are finally within sight. We will soon be enjoying great sunny weekends and planning family vacations. We all know that with summer comes the sun and with the sun comes the need to protect our skin. Whether you are hitting the beach, the golf course or the backyard this summer remember these 5 tips to keep you protected.
One would think that after so many years of warnings about the effects of UV rays on our skin and the risk of cancer, that everyone would use appropriate sun protection. But, sadly this is not the case as the number of cases of skin cancer continues to rise.
Sunscreen should be considered and essential part of everyone’s summer. A minimal of SPF 15 should be considered for most people. Remember to apply at least 20 minutes before sun exposure and reapply regularly
The first line of defense against the summer rays is your clothing. There are several manufacturers who produce clothing specifically for the summer sun. If you plan on being on the golf course or the water, check your sports clothing store for some amazing styles that will keep you cool and protected.
For children there is often the fight to keep them lathered in sunscreen while at the pool or beach. If you find it difficult to keep your little one protected with sun screen, consider a rash guard or swim shirt.. If kids start wearing them from a young age, they will just consider their swim shirt part of their bathing suit and for the older kids, rash guards can be considered extremely “cool”. Surfers have been using them for years
Don’t forget your eyes! UV rays can do damage to your eyes and this is especially true for people with light coloured eyes. Sun exposure has been known to be responsible for some cataracts and certain types of macular degeneration. Make certain you purchase good quality sunglasses that protect against both UVA and UVB rays and always wear them when outdoors.
During summer it is best to use a face cream or foundation that has an SPF of 15 for everyday use and a lip balm over your lipstick will keep your lips protected. Wear a stronger sunscreen when hanging outside and pay attention to your lips and nose. If you are hanging out right on the water, consider a cream with zinc for extra protection.
One of the best gifts you can do for your skin is to remember to stay hydrated. Although, keeping hydrated will not protect you from the sun, your skin will love you for it.
